I’m in a no-BS type of mood today.
I just got off the phone, and my conversation with a work acquaintance really fired me up. She was just bitching and whining about how she hated her job and wanted to start her own ‘doggy day care’ business. She’s completely crazy in love with dogs.
Her constant complaint is:
‘I just can’t find the time to do it!’
Here’s why it’s important to spend time writing down your goals.
A study conducted on 1979 Harvard MBA graduate students asked the question:
“Have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?”
The result:
- 3% had written goals and plans
- 13% had goals, but they weren’t in writing
- 84% had no goals at all
Fast forward 10 years and this is what happened to these graduates:
- The 13% of the class who had goals but did not write them down were earning twice the amount of the 84% who had no goals.
- The 3% who had written goals were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97% of the class combined!
Neera, you’ve got to admit these findings are absolutely stunning!
And you are welcome to look me up and I can help you with specifying your goal(s).
I gave my ‘time poor’ work colleague the following advice that you may also find useful. The essential first step is to take a self-inventory of your time.
How to take an inventory of your time:
- Plan to inventory on a daily basis for 7 days.
- As in the graph below, write down how much time you spend doing various activities.
- At the end of the week, tally up the time spent in each category.
- Take a look at where you could shave off time, and use it towards focusing on your goal e.g., maybe you could cut down on watching TV. In the example below, cutting your viewing time by 50% will give you a massive 8 hours back in your week.
I know at the end of this exercise you will have found the time that you thought you didn’t have to write your goals.

Writing down your goals will hugely stack the odds in your favour of hitting the goals.

P.S. As Peter Drucker says “Know Thy Time.” He claims that “effective executives, in my observation, do not start with their tasks. They start with their time. . . . They start by finding out where their time actually goes. This three-step process includes: recording time; managing time; and consolidating time.”
