Week 15: Becoming happy is as simple as something you already do every single day!

making a simple change can be as effective as restingThis weekend my man and I spent a wonderful, fun-filled couple of days at a health spa.

The surroundings were totally amazing, right in the heart of the green English countryside. The care and attention we received at the hotel were something to die for.

I felt completely happy and at peace with myself.

Why am I telling you this?

I noticed while I was there that I totally forgot about all the stresses and strains in my life. So I got to wondering why I was so able to relax in that setting.

What is it about getting away the enables us to feel at peace?

Why do we so easily feel happy in a different setting?

What is the key to feeling positive in our everyday lives?

Then the answer came to me . . .

Gazing at the green moors of England . . .

Enjoying the bubbly water of the hot tub . . .

Appreciating the masseuse’s hands as she squeezed the stress out of my neck . . .

Making a change is as effective as resting.

In a nutshell, by changing my surroundings I snapped out of my habitual way of thinking. All the things I normally thought about floated away because that weekend my mind was absorbed by all the new things around me.

The newness of my surroundings caused me to snap out of my normal way of thinking.

And making a change feels, to your body, like you’ve had a good rest!

So here’s the good news:

If you’re the type of person who finds it hard to change your mind-set from negative to positive, then here’s an easy way to start:

Think of a small change you can make in your daily routine. Making even a small change will energize you, much like rest does.

Here are a few quick ways to make a change:

  • If you walk or drive to work, change the route you take.
  • If you use public transportation, catch the train or bus at a different stop than normal OR sit in a different seat than normal.
  • Eat something you’ve never tried before.
  • Change your exercise routine; try something new like Zumba or boxing.
  • Change the type of clothes you wear.
  • Listen to a new piece of music: if you listen to rap, try classical; if you listen to classical, try rap.
  • When you go food shopping, change the route you normally take through the aisles.
  • Select a new ring tone on your phone.
  • Wear a new fragrance; even washing your hair with a new shampoo works.
  • Talk to someone you wouldn’t normally talk to.

Go ahead!

Go out on a limb and make a change.

Making a change will alter your thoughts, and your thoughts determine how happy you are.

How you feel about YOURSELF [your state] will determine your level of success in life.

And the more you can feel amazing, the easier it will be to focus on your goals.

You’ll find that a change of routine will make you feel different—almost ecstatic, like you had a good rest.
