We’re all addicted to our habits.
And an addiction to anything, by its very definition, is hard to break.
What are your habits?
- Drinking your favourite brand of coffee every morning?
- Eating a cookie every day with your lunch?
- Biting your fingernails when you’re nervous?
- A negative state of mind?
Wait. How can my state of mind be an addiction?
On a biological level, your thoughts lead you to feel a certain way. And when you continually think the same types of thoughts, they get hardwired into your body. How you feel in a given circumstance becomes an automatic reaction.

For example, say you feel like eating ice cream.
You think of what flavours of ice cream you have in the freezer. You even think of the flavours the store has. How about the toppings and candy mix-ins at the ice cream parlour?
Then you remind yourself that you’re supposed to be on a diet.
‘But just one scoop won’t hurt’, you tell yourself. After all, you’re in the habit of eating ‘just one scoop’ every day. Each evening at the same time you find yourself craving ice cream. ‘I can get serious about my diet tomorrow’. ‘I’ve had a bad day, and I really need that ice cream.’
It’s time to face the truth: Your body is addicted to ice cream, and it will do anything to get it!
The same principle applies to your state of mind.
What type of person are you?
- Happy?
- Angry?
- Jolly?
- Sad?
- A victim?
Have you ever wondered why you are the way you are? Maybe you’re addicted to a certain personality type.
The simple (but not so simple) answer is to stop thinking the same thoughts every day.
Here’s how:
Instead of ‘I’m such a loser’, think ‘I am doing what it takes to be a success’.
Instead of ‘I’ll never get in shape’, think ‘I ate a healthy salad today. This is a great start to getting in shape’.
Instead of ‘I’m in debt and can never get out’, think ‘I have an extra $100 this month. I’ll use it to pay down some debt rather than going out to dinner’.
Be mindful that when you undertake this process, it will feel uncomfortable at first because change is uncomfortable for the body. Much like trying not to reach for the ice cream you’re used to eating every day, your body will try to get you back to your previous thinking patterns.
But don’t give up.
Stay with it, and like any skill, you can master a different set of thoughts.
